DescriptionThis tour de force dish is decorated in the more classic style of the earlier 18th century. The dish is molded to create the illusion of an opening lotus in the inside center of the dish. The decoration in the center is of a floral branch, possibly peony, is outlined in overglaze iron red. This outlining delineates all the parts of the flowers and its leaves, which are then shaded with gilt enamel. The inside edge is also outlined in a similar fashion with a stylized wave form and then executed in gilt. The underside of the dish reflects the molded lotus form of the interior with an overglaze enamel decoration of an opening lotus. Each lotus petal is carefully shaded in pink enamel. The edge is simply decorated with floral roundels. There is no mark on the base. It is very likely that a plate of this quality would have been made for both the European trade market as well as for domestic consumption.
