DescriptionWestern Panama and Southeastern Costa Rica shared a cultural tradition in the ancient past known as Chiriquí. This bowl is likely from a Panamanian site near Barriles, an area where recent archaeological studies have discovered similar artifacts. The pottery from this area is characterized by simple, unpainted forms, which include engraved or modeled decoration known as Tarragó Biscuit. The appliqué that decorates this small bowl is exquisitely detailed and shows an anthropomorphic figure holding his head in his hands. There is great emotion in the expression on his face.On View
