    DescriptionDespite its simple form, the extraordinary technical skills of Colima ceramic artists are visible in this piece. The upper surface of the pot is decorated with the calendric glyph, “5 Reed,” which marks the celebration of Chalchiutlicue, the Aztec goddess of ground water. Iconography related to water deities was a common decoration. The design was carved after the firing process, which is characteristic of Colima ceramic production. Just like the rest of the human and animal figures from Colima included in the exhibition, this jar was likely placed in a shaft tomb as a mortuary offering.
