    DescriptionThis jar is an example of Jicote polychrome of the Mascara variety. Jicote is characterized by a large, globular body with a compressed neck, flared rim, and simple, round bottom. The feline face is specifically characteristic of the Mascara variety of Jicote polychrome. Faces on these vessels are portrayed with two types of eyes and this example shows the slanted, teardrop shape surrounding the solid, inner pupil. A form of effigy vessel, paint is very effectively utilized on this large jar to convey the sober face of a jaguar or other large feline. A large jar with restricted opening such as this must have been utilized for storage of water or another important liquid.
