DescriptionTraces of the original orange-red slip and black paint remain on this female ceramic figurine from Nayarit. A lack of decoration, an unusual trait for figural art from West Mexico, highlights the curvilinear female body with voluptuous hips and thighs. Both hands encircle the breasts and rest delicately over the abdomen. The heart-shaped head, coffee-bean eyes, and overall simplicity correspond to the Chinesco sub-style from Nayarit. Usually found in shaft tomb contexts, Nayarit ceramic figurines traditionally have been interpreted as burial offerings.
