DescriptionThe Light That Won't Fail, based on the 1961 painting of the same title, combines an upward turned female face exhaling smoke (from a Philip Morris cigarette ad), (a man pulling on) socks, and a comb. The latter two images suggest the ritual of daily rising, and Rosenquist has said that the "light" is his inspiration and the picture visualizes what he does every morning before he begins to work. Rosenquist frequently borrowed the same advertising images for different compositions, but unlike other Pop artists, he did not work serially.
