DescriptionAn Early Classic Maya polychrome vessel decorated with a jaguar finial cover, this elaborate piece of art was likely made as a tomb or burial offering. One the preeminent symbols of royal authority, the jaguar was modeled into a handle while the remainder of the vessel was painted with a dense concentration of scrolls and geometric designs. Similar vessels are well known from the important Maya city-state of Calakmul, in modern Campeche, Mexico.
