DescriptionThis silver disk is one of four which Dr. Junius Bird, formerly of the American Museum of Natural History, New York, has cited from what he calls "Litter No. 2 Tomb," excavated in the vicinity of Chan Chan near Trujillo, Peru. The exact function of the disc is unknown but it was possibly a shield cover or an adornment for the interior of a palace. A central boss is ringed by four concentric repousse bands, each composed of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures. The complex iconography appears to focus on the interplay of human and animal forms within various geographic settings which include water, earth and air.
    Visual Description

This ornate silver disk measures thirteen-and-a-half inches across, and is adorned with complex iconography, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures. The relief designs are arranged in four concentric bands with a polished silver circle at the center. The bands are packed with repeating designs which leave no space unadorned.  The outer band features two fishermen in a sea of shells. Wearing broad hats and carrying wooden paddles, they sit on boats with curved bows made of bundled tortora reeds. The second band depicts undulating waves connected to a head; a deity known as the Anthropomorphized Wave. The third band depicts a caravan of people carrying shells over land. Shown in profile wearing broad-rimmed headdresses, they are surrounded by piles of spiny oyster shells. In this band, the figures are connected by an undulating line that may indicate a confinement rope. The fourth band, which rings the polished silver circle at the center, depicts five anthropomorphic sea creatures or spirits.
