DescriptionSamuel Lothrop often purchased textiles that were well used by the Maya villagers around Lake Atitlán. This cofradía huipil, or ceremonial blouse, is a good example of a piece that was not made for tourists or collectors and would have only been available used. Made from three panels of all natural cotton fiber, the color scheme includes traditional bright greens, reds, yellows, pinks, blues, and purples. There are both woven and embroidered female figures on the chest, but note the incredibly small armholes, indicating the piece was custom made either for a woman or a man very small in stature.
