DescriptionLichtenstein began his first series, landscapes, in 1964. Of two types, one was representational, derived from the mechanical imagery of cartoons. The other was quite abstract. The Lowe's work belongs to the second group, which Lichtenstein made while experimenting with new materials. The Lowe's work makes use of a shimmering pink vinyl that catches light and simulates the appearance of clouds. The iridescent surface renders the image sensual, luxurious, and optically illusionistic. Only the title roots the composition in the objective world, although a dark, narrow strip divides the upper zone horizontally from the lower, establishing a horizon line of sorts.
