DescriptionThe ceramics produced by Chancay potters were less technically developed than the Nazca polychromes or the Moche portrait vessels, but they still bear a sensitivity that commands a second look. The clay has a high sand content. Colors are generally limited to a thin reddish-brown or black paint design over a white slip which is at times carelessly applied. Details are at best suggestive but sculpturally the completed vessels are both charming and functional. The sides of this vessel have been painted with a brown geometric design over a white slip which forms the ground for a modelled monkey. Monkeys were not native to the desert coast and were probably traded from the Amazon Basin located to the east of the Andes mountains.On View
